About San Juan

General Information
Puerto Rico's capital and its largest municipality is called San Juan. It was founded way back in 1521 by Spanish colonizers and was first called Ciudad de Puerto Rico or the City of Puerto Rico. Named after the Christian saint John the Baptist, the city of San Juan is also known by other nicknames such as La Ciudad Amurallada or the Walled City, La Losa or the Tile, and Los Capitalinos or Those from the Capital.

Population
It is currently considered as the 42nd largest city under United States jurisdiction since it was approximated that more than 434,374 individuals made up the city's population. Aside from being the largest city in Puerto Rico, San Juan is also Puerto Rico's oldest city which is probably one of the reasons why it was made the seat of capital.

The population density of San Juan is 3,517.1 people per square kilometer of area (9.144.7 per sq mi). It is also approximated that there are about 182,101 housing units in the city of San Juan with a housing density of 3,808.4. The average per capita income in San Juan is $12,437. Geography

There are 18 wards, pueblos or barrios found within San Juan including Tortugo, Rio Piedras, Old San Juan, Puerto Nuevo, Cupey, Hato Rey, Sabana Llana Norte, Monacillos, Caimito, Quebrada Arenas, Santurce, Pueblo,Sabana Llana Sur, Oriente, Monacillos Urbano, Universidad, Bobernador Piñero, El Cinco, and San Juan Antiguo.

Climate
The climate in San Juan, Puerto Rico is considered as marine tropical, like many other areas found within the Caribbean region. The average temperature throughout the year is 82º F, up to 90º F during summer and 70º F during winter.

Economy
Tourism plays an important role in San Juan, Puerto Rico's economy due to the city's magnificent natural surroundings and the perfect yearly climate. The manufacturing industry is another major source of income and employment in the city. San Juan is home to several manufacturing companies that produce medicines and other chemical substances, electronic devices and tools, textiles, rum and plenty of local food products.
