Sure, you can go kayaking on any body of water deep and wide enough to accommodate your boat but where else can you experience paddling your kayak at night while the water glows in the dark?
San Juan offers one of the most memorable nature trips you could have with its bioluminescence bay kayak tours. Located at Las Cabezas Reserve, the Bioluminescent Lagoon is one of only four bioluminescence locations known to man. The bay contains hundreds of thousands of single-celled dinoflagellates that emit a flash of light at night when disturbed. Because of the high concentration of these microorganisms, the seemingly magical glow enfolds fish and other organisms in the water as well as the paddles of your kayak.
The lagoon is about one and a half hours outside of San Juan. The tour starts at the pier where the staff will give instructions and provide visitors with required life jackets. There will be a demonstration of paddling techniques and proper embarkation on the kayak. The staff will also provide safety tips on kayaking.
Guests will travel across the mangrove channels of Las Cabezas de San Juan natural reserve and past the restored Fajardo Lighthouse. They will then board a kayak and paddle through mangroves, touching the glowing water and observing the nocturnal life of the ecosystem in the area. There are tour guides who will provide interesting and useful information about the wildlife and their habitat.
The kayak tour lasts for about four hours while the round trip bus ride is about three hours. The minimum age requirement for the tour is eight years old. Guests are advised to bring insect repellents. The rates are $64 per person for children and $71 for adults.
River kayaking adventures can also be experienced in the north-eastern part of Puerto Rico. In one of the rivers in the island, kayakers will have a chance to see trees, mangroves, and different species of wildlife along the banks. The minimum age requirement is still eight years old. Pregnant women are also not allowed in this tour. The price starts at $77 for children and $85 for adults.
